
Getting the Most Out of Your Standard Mercury Bulbs
Let’s be honest: standard mercury bulbs aren’t flashy, but they’re the real workhorses of the printing and coating world. We don’t see them as just another part number in a catalog. To us, they’re the engine that keeps your whole curing line moving. They pump out a broad spectrum of UV light—mostly in the UVC and UVB ranges—which is exactly what your inks and adhesives need to snap into place and harden.
Balancing Power and Heat
Getting the performance right comes down to a simple tug-of-war between wattage and voltage. If you want your line to run faster, you need more irradiance, which means higher wattage. But here’s the catch: if you crank up the power without a cooling system that can keep up, you’re going to cook your substrate or kill your bulb way too soon. That’s why we make sure these lamps match your ballast output perfectly. When things don’t line up, you get premature burnouts or, even worse, “patchy” curing across the web. Nobody wants to deal with that.
The Glass and the Glow
We use high-purity fused quartz for the bulb envelope. Why? Because standard glass absorbs short-wave UV radiation. Quartz lets it slide right through, getting the light where it actually needs to be. Depending on the gas mix and heat, you’re usually looking at either low-pressure or medium-pressure lamps. Medium-pressure ones are great for those thicker ink layers because they hit harder, but they run hot. You’ll need to be a bit more aggressive with your thermal management there.
The Little Things That Matter
These bulbs are designed to just slide right into your existing system. Simple. But please, double-check your alignment in the reflector. It sounds trivial, but**even a 2mm offset can create “cold spots.”**That leads to uncured ink and that annoying tacky feeling on the surface of your product. And a quick tip: keep a close eye on your lamp hours. As the mercury vapor degrades, your UV output dips. You’ll notice it when you start slowing down the conveyor just to get a full cure. That’s a productivity killer. Better to swap the bulb now than to let your throughput tank.
